Abstract: The tailing coated with antimony oxychloride that is flame retardant was produced by hydrolysis using the flotation tailings of bauxite from Xiaoguan, Zhengzhou, Henan. The characterization and flame retardancy performance of the coated tailing were made by means of scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (DSC-TG),limiting oxygen index(LOI)and cone calorimeter(CONE).The results show that the coated tailing has rough surface and non-uniform coating thickness; the coating phase is mainly composed of SbOCl and also some Sb4O5Cl2; the coated tailing will be thermal-decomposed at a temperature greater than 200 ℃ and has a better flame retardancy performance than SbOCl produced at the equivalent conditions when used for polyethylene flame retarding; and it also has a smoke suppression performance.
