Abstract: To improve the technology for treating chlorinated hydrocarbons in ground water, adsorption of carbon tetrachloride in simulated water sample by modified bentonite was investigated. The test results indicate that when natural calcium base bentonite is modified by HDTMA- Br, its particle space will obviously increase and its particle surface will turn from originally hydrophilic to hydrophobic, enabling it to effectively adsorb and remove carbon tetrachloride from water. Its optimal adsorption conditions include bentonite dosage of 5 g/L, adsorption time of 2 h, and adsorption temperature of 30 ℃.Under these conditions, CCl4 removal rate reached 70%~80% when modified bentonite was used in treating a real underground water polluted by 1.60 mg/L CCl4.
