Abstract: In light of the features of red mud from Bayer process, the characteristics of Pingguolu red mud dump and the physical and mechanical properties of the red mud in the dump are analyzed. The causes for the cracks in the surface of the dump stacked by red mud dry discharge are elaborated and the stability of red mud dump slope with crack existence is calculated by using the SLOP/W module in Geo-Slope software. The result indicates that the existence of cracks can reduce the static safety coefficient of the red mud dam by about 0.5% and the red mud dump which has been stacked to the secondary sub-dam is stable at normal operation conditions.
