Abstract: The control ability of safety pillars to ground pressure activities as a point of entry to reveal the necessity of safety pillars or not by FLAC3D.The results show that ore pillars can effectively inhibit ground pressure activities of the adjacent region on the stage of pillars forming. But when the vertical height of pillars increase, the pillars deformed and failure occur, the internal strain energy stored in them will get released, and the overall stiffness of pillars will be lower. It makes the effects of the control ground pressure activities weaken and it can not play an expected role in controlling ground pressure activities as a large stiffness structure. Therefore, on the basis of a more comprehensive study on the technical issues which involves in ore pillars, it should be considered to removing them safely.
