The paper introduces the feasibility of applying radon gas in metal ore prospecting and reviews the previous achievements in metal ore exploration. The analysis indicates that applying the radon gas in metal ore prospecting is an efficient deep-penetration exploration method.Presently, it is mainly used to find concealed gold deposit of fractured structural type, W-Sn-Ta-Nb deposit of granite type and hydrothermal multi-metal deposits. The abnormalities can be positive or negative. The problems in this respect include the lack of study on radon gas source, transportation and abnormality formation mechanism; the inability to judge the ore bearing potentiality of fractured belt or structure; the lack of radon gas abnormity decomposition and reconstruction techniques; and the lack of a radon gas abnormal mode for typical metal deposits. Finally, some research subjects concerning the application of radon gas in metal ore prospecting are proposed.

In the construction of deep tunnel, stratified surrounding rock may crack at some conditions and further become bent, causing severe consequences if the bending deformation is large. The limit stress of conversion from stratified structure to slab-rent structure is derived by limit equilibrium analysis and used to distinguish the bending failure from material failure.Given the randomness of parameters, the state function model for the bending deformation of stratified surrounding rock is constructed and a stochastic FEM model is also constructed by Monte-Carlo method. The analysis of real cases indicates that the two methods have obtained basically the same calculation results and can both calculate the probability of different deformation amounts, giving more scientific results than common deterministic methods can, which can be a reference to other similar engineering study.

The deformation stability of rock test system is studied based on rigidity criterion and nonlinear catastrophe theory. The rock deformation stability is dependent on the environment rigidity and the equivalent rigidity of rock. The rock instability occurs at a position after the peak value in the constitutive curve. An increase in the environment rigidity will be beneficial to the system stability and rigid loading will generally not lead to a strong instability-caused destruction. The formula for the deformation value corresponding to the instability position of the test system is found based on the cusp catastrophe model and rigidity criterion.

With the speeding-up of the construction of mining cities and mining areas, the lack of land for construction has become increasingly prominent. It is inevitable to utilize caved mined-out areas for the construction of various transport or electrical and communication facilities. The key issue for the structures above the old mined-out area is the residual movement amount of the old mined-out area. The law of subsidence and the rate of subsidence after stoping halt were obtained by analyzing the ground movement data of several mine areas. The mechanism of the ground subsidence speed change after stoping halt was analyzed in consideration of the stress-strain change law of the rock mass overlying the mined-out area.Models for different stages were established and used to forecast the ground subsidence speed and amount after stoping halt, providing a basis for the forecast of residual movement deformation of old mined-out area.

Chengchao iron mine is a typical skarn deposit in the southeast of Hubei province.Ore-controlling structures are mainly characterized by the superposition of dynamic thermal contact metamorphic structure, contact zone structure and various faults and fissures. The orebodies mainly occur in the steep-to-gentle transition section of the contact plane between granite and wall rock, and lie in the synclinal trough of the near N-S strike to the side of magma rock. From the deep extension of the contact plane between granite and wall rock, we conclude that both sides along the “ridge” of the near N-S strike between E14 to E0 prospecting lines and the section west of W27 prospecting line, especially the section between W49 to W59 prospecting lines, are provided with the structural and stratigraphic conditions favorable for mineralization, and have good exploration prospects.

Rectorite-chitosan composite sorbent was prepared by impregnation method, which was used in the adsorption test for Zn2+ containing solution.Based on the test, it was used to treat the practical electroplating waste water containing zinc. The result shows that the composite sorbent has a high adsorption rate when the mass ratio of chitosan to rectorite was 0.04 and the deacetylation degree of chitosan was 90%.At a Zn2+concentration of the solution of lower than 100 mg/L, a pH value of 7, a composite sorbent dosage of 3.0 g/L and an adsorption time of 40 min, the composite sorbent can have a Zn2+ adsorption rate of higher than 99%,with the treated water conforming to the requirements in the state standard for Class A sewage discharge.

The tailings discarded by a certain lead-zinc concentrator in Guizhou are characterized by high oxidation of lead-zinc minerals, fine particle size, serious sliming and difficult dressing.A technical process consisting of preferential-bulk flotation of sulfide minerals, zinc-sulfur separation of bulk flotation concentrate and sulfuration-flotation of oxidized lead minerals was adopted and gained good test indexes, and then used in production, which effectively and comprehensively recovered the lead, zinc and sulfur minerals that would have otherwise been lost, with the lead grade and recovery of oxidized lead concentrate being 48.56% and 85.38%.

The utilization as resource of tailings from a Shaanxi copper mine was studied, including their re-concentration and the brick-making by the re-concentration tailings. The result shows that the pre-concentration of the tailings via spiral chute can discard tailings of an 85.53% yield, and a qualified copper concentrate grading 15.86% at an 83.24% recovery and a qualified sulfur concentrate grading 41.68% at a 85.96% recovery can be obtained by grinding and sequential flotation of copper and sulfur of the pre-concentrated concentrate. The total tailings of re-concentration, when mixed with cement and local construction-use sand, can be made into MU10 unfired bricks.

MU15 dry-pressed burning-free bricks were made with iron tailings from Shaanxi as the main raw material, and by addition of a small amount of cement and a proper amount of river sands. The effect of the mass ratio of iron tailings to river sand, cement amount, water addition for mixing, forming pressure and chemical additives on their compression strength was investigated. The results indicate that their 28 d compression strength can reach 16.4 MPa when they are made of iron tailings at such conditions: a forming pressure of 15 MPa, a mass ratio of iron tailings to river sand of 1.25∶1.00, a cement amount accounting for 10% of the total dry solids, a water addition for mixing amounting to 8% of the total dry solids, and a naphthalene-based super-plasticizer content and a sodium gluconate content of 0.8% and 0.03% of the cement dosage respectively.Their other performance indexes are in conformity with the requirements in JC/T 422-2007 standard “Unfired Bricks Made of Tailings”.

Mg(OH)2 whiskers that are surface-modified by sodium stearate and potassium oleate and PVC plastics were made into an Mg(OH)2 whiskers/PVC composite. The effect of Mg(OH)2 whiskers' content and distribution on PVC's mechanical properties were studied. The results show that surface-modified Mg(OH)2 whiskers can be distributed homogeneously in PVC plastic; when the Mg(OH)2 whiskers amount to 30% of the composite, the PVC composite has the best mechanical properties, with the elastic modulus improved by 41.18% compared with that of pure PVC plastics, and reaching 0.24 GPa.The main reason for this is that Mg(OH)2 whiskers that are uniformly distributed assume the load transfer in the composite.
